My Viewpoint: Bringing science and technology closer to you
[Sampok] 10/28/2004
Hello everyone, as a student engineer in computer science, electronics, telecoms and networks I recognize how important these sciences (or technologies) can play a major role in our society.
Most developing countries have indeed understood the importance of science and its effectiveness. However, In 3rd world countries such as Ghana, our main hiderance is with our language of communication. Most developped countries such us Germany, France, Britain, USA, Japan for example, have one thing in common.
In each of these countries, you find at least, one leading language by which different sorts of exchanges are made within the country. However, third world countries like Ghana though they sometimes boast themselves of having english, french or spanish as official languages, the problem is that people within those countries, naturally, are unable to learn those languages appropriately and even after postgraduate studies the level of their understanding of the language leaves much to be desired.
Sometimes, it is even difficult for them to get a decent job in foreign english speaking countries. Much more sadly, they sound funny when speaking with their '3rd world accents', making them look ridiculous!
What I intend to to is to enable people living in 3rd world countries like Ghana, to learn easily electronics, computer science, mecanics and all those sciences and technologies which are the core foundations of the prosperity if the rich countries today.
Therefore, I'm trying to create a tutorial in Twi (or Akan) for electronics, computer science, website creation and if possible in mecanics. Why in Twi ? Why not in Fante? in Dagomba? in awona? for example ? Well, the answer is simple: i dont know how to write any of these languages. So if you`re interested in what i`m doing or in what i intend to do in future and you wish to help me translate it to other languages, you`re welcome.
And believe me, there are lots of interesting things to discover.
Your support is welcome: sponsors, website domain, money (not for the moment but who knows...after theory comes experiment either in electronics or computer sciences). I've managed to find out how real twi language word-processing could be done. In fact the only characters which are difficult to find are the 'ε' and the ')' if realy you want your twi text to sound as is spoken. I`m already working on an article that addresses this issue and it will be soon on my personal website at:
